JONGG

Charleston cheat sheet

The six Charleston passes of American mahjong with their directions, the blind pass, the vote and the courtesy pass across, on one page.

The first Charleston: everyone plays it

  1. 1 Pass right: 3 tiles to the player on your right, who plays after you.
  2. 2 Pass across: 3 tiles to the player across the table.
  3. 3 Pass left: 3 tiles to the player on your left, who played before you. Blind pass allowed

The vote

Then each seat votes; one no skips the second Charleston (left, across, right).

After that comes the courtesy pass, then play.

The second Charleston: only if every seat votes yes

  1. 4 Pass left: 3 tiles to the player on your left, who played before you.
  2. 5 Pass across: 3 tiles to the player across the table.
  3. 6 Pass right: 3 tiles to the player on your right, who plays after you. Blind pass allowed

Blind on the last pass

On the last pass of each Charleston (first left, second right) you may hand on up to three incoming tiles unseen; your own plus blind make three.

Every other pass is your own tiles only.

Two players never pass blind.

Someone passes their own

A blind pass hands on tiles you have not seen yet, so at least one seat must pass three of its own.

If everyone else already went blind, you cannot: there would be no tiles in the ring.

Courtesy pass across

Offer 0 to 3 tiles to the seat across from you. You both pass the smaller number.

Nothing moves until both of you have offered; agreeing on zero passes nothing.

When every pair is settled, play starts with the dealer.

The right number

A Charleston pass is exactly three tiles: your own, plus any you hand on unseen.

A courtesy pass is exactly the number you and the seat across agreed.

Jokers stay home

A joker never goes in a pass, not in the Charleston and not in the courtesy.

You can discard one, but a discarded joker is gone for good.

Two players

Each Charleston is one pass of 3, across; with two seats every direction is the other player.
